As a Dazai #1 fan, I was tempted to make a whole video about his books, but I strained myself and decided not to forget about less famous authors.
So instead I’ll introduce one of his friends from buraiha school, Sakaguchi Ango. By the way, a fun fact first: when Dazai, Ango and Oda Sakunosuke were invited to hold literary debates, all three of them turned up so drunk they could barely speak, so even though the debates did take place, no one could report what exactly was said by the participants. That’s the spirit of buraiha, alcohol and clowning around. Dear old Ango also publicly claimed that Dazai should have tried to avoid writing during his morning hangovers. Truly interesting people they were.
Anyway, Ango was the one who summarized the buraiha philosophy in a marvelous piece called “Darakuron”. The main idea of which is summed up in a phrase “Ikiyo, ochiyou”. Ango claimed that we have to embrace the chaotic nature of being human and stop striving for ideals. I’ve only read it recently, but I thought that it is exactly the text everyone should read during the pandemic, when a lot of people realize that they have no control over their lives anymore.
